John Montoya, 91, of Ojo Caliente passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He retired from the New Jersey Zinc Mine in Gilman, CO in 1977. John was preceded in death by his parents, Tiburcio and Roseanna Montoya; brothers, Ernest Montoya, Fernando Lopez and Juan de la Luz Montoya; sisters: Olive Martinez and Elisa Gonzales; father and mother-in-law, Evaristo and Albinita Jaramillo. John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Montoya; daughter, Mary Smith and husband Jerry of Wesminster, CO; son, Robert Montoya of Riverside, CA; son, James Montoya and wife Jan of Ojo Caliente; daughter, Roseann Baca and husband Melvin of Ojo Caliente; 6 grandchildren: Joey, Susan, Tamera, Robyn, Juan and Katrina; 7 great-grandchildren: Ethan, Uriah, Jade, Jacinda, Marcos, Halina and Jayden. Public visitation will be held on Sunday, February 20, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel at DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 21, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ojo Caliente with burial to follow at Ojo Caliente Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Aaron Riley, Dean Halbeisen, Ethan Smith, Uriah Halbeisen, Benny Mora and Juan Baca; honorary pallbearers: will be the grandchildren.
