It is with deep and heavy sadness that we announce the death of Joe R. Valdez Sr., a resident of Santa Fe, passed away sudden and unexpected, on Thursday, August 4, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Lugarda Valdez; brother, David Valdez, sister, Dolores Valdez; his in-laws Freddy and Corine Maestas and sister-in-law Eloise Chavez.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Theresa Valdez, a loving father to his children, Melissa Valdez (Larry), Patricia Valdez, Crystal Valdez Baker (Chris), Joe Valdez Jr.; grandchildren, John and Michael King, Cameron, and Carlos Baker; siblings Martha Valdez (Mitch), Leroy Valdez (Laura), Bertha DeVargas (Phillip), Cecilia Valdez, Danny Valdez (Cindy) and Theresa Valdez. He is also survived by his God Children, Vanessa LeBlanc, Alyssa Merrill, Marcus Duran, Nathaniel Valdez and Vickie Romero, a very special nephew who he cared for very much Michael Valdez and several nephews and nieces who loved him dearly.
Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle and he will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him. Joe loved his motorcycle, taking care of his animals, working on his yard, his beautiful gate he made and was so proud of. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed going horseback riding, fishing, hunting with family and friends. His grandchildren meant the world to him. He had a special bond with each of them. He loved his dog Buster. He loved riding his horse and today he rode into the sunset. Joe loved having nothing but the best. In high school he was voted “best dresser” He knew how to dress and always made sure he looked nice. Even when he would go feed his animals he would be dressed up and Joe, always looked nice.
Joe touched lives and made lifelong friends everywhere he went and never said no to anyone in need. He was a great person with a great personality and always had a smile and a hug to give. Joe gave hugs that were worth more than a thousand words and made you feel safe. He will always be missed but never forgotten. Joe loved life, he loved nature and to just be thankful. He took great pride doing things for this family. He was a kind and exceptional man.
Throughout his professional career he was the Director for IT/Networking for General Services Department and he retired from General Services Department with 25 years of service. After retirement he returned to his passion as the CIO for Cultural Affair putting his talents to best use and doing what he loved. He retired the second time around. He enjoyed his retirement spending time doing what he liked the most. Public visitation will begin on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Memorial mass will be celebrated on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ojo Caliente, with a burial to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Rosario Cemetery in Santa Fe.
