Joe (Pepe) A. Salazar passed away peacefully at the age of 90 years old on Sunday, February 21, 2016, surrounded by his family and friends who prayed and sang over him while he journeyed on to be with his beloved parents, siblings, and children. Joe was born in Pojoaque, NM, on August 4, 1925.
Mr. Salazar, as he was known to the thousands of students he taught over his long teaching career, made an indelible impact on his Northern New Mexico community. Most notably, Mr. Salazar taught musical theatre to high school students, engaging young people with a sense of humor and a fearless approach to life and art.
Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. Never without a song for any occasion, and never happier than when he was playing the piano and singing, Joe was a community-builder who brought young and old together with music and stories. He encouraged us with his faith and inspired us to think critically and appreciate the beauty of life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Prajedes and Maria Paula (Pablita) Salazar; children, Pablita and Aaron Salazar; ex-wife and mother of four of his children, Donelia Roybal; brothers and sisters, Miramon Salazar (wife Juanita), Ramoncita Salazar, Tilla Roberts (husband Charlie), Gaby Lujan (husband Albert), Pat Salazar (wives Eugenia & Sara), Benny Salazar, Trinnie Romero (husband Alfonso), and Zeke Salazar (wife Clara); sister-in-law, Carmen Salazar.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Salazar; children, Dr. Pepita Wilkinson (husband Dr. Dean Wilkinson), Ted Salazar, Pilar Salazar (partner Genesis Hernandez), Petra Salazar (husband Francisco Gallegos); step-children, Fern Renville, Chenoa Seaboy, Tarras Seaboy, and Tarral Seaboy (wife Danielle Benavidez Seaboy); grandchildren, Mickie and Lincoln Wilkinson, Cassie and Khiana Seaboy, Leah and Therese Lujan; brother, Damacio Salazar; sister-in-law, Tina Salazar.
