Jeanne Barck

d. July 29, 2015

Jeanne Collins Barck of Espanola, New Mexico passed away in her home on July 29, 2015. She was born in Cedartown, Georgia, in 1936, the daughter of Emily Sanders Collins and William Goodall Collins. After earning degrees from Duke University, she moved to New Mexico and taught at the New Mexico Girls’ School in Albuquerque, served as a school principal and worked in various education roles in schools in Los Lunas, Farmington, Anthony, and Pojoaque. She was also Assistant Director in the Title I Office of the New Mexico Department of Education, auditing programs throughout the state.
In 1973, Jeanne married Philip Barck, a fellow educator. Their 38-year marriage was truly a loving and equal partnership, ending only with Phil’s death in 2011.
After her retirement, Jeanne held numerous positions with the New Mexico Association of Educational Retirees (NMAER), serving as newsletter editor for nearly 20 years and as Educational Service Chair at the time of her death. She and Phil initiated the NMAER Adopt a Legislator (AAL) program, providing one-on-one information to state legislators about bills important to educational retirees. In 2015, she was awarded the Administrator of the Year award. Her vast knowledge and passion about educational issues facing the state are irreplaceable.
Although a true New Mexican, Jeanne never lost her southern accent or her southern charm. She made friends with everyone and was always thinking of ways to help others. She will be greatly missed by her family and all those  who knew and loved her.
Jeanne is survived by step-daughters Colonel Emily Perry of South Carolina and Dr. Rebecca Barck of Maryland, two grandchildren (Luke and Adelaide Schulman) and cousin John Sanders of Georgia, with whom she shared her childhood.
