JAKE MARTINEZ “Jake the Barber”, 89, a lifelong resident of Española was born on September 27, 1923 and passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, December 8, 2012. He was preceded in death by his little brothe,r Jose Pedro, father, Pedro; beloved mother, Fedelina Vigil Martinez; sister, Lucy; brother, Ignacio; father-in-law, Pedro Gomez and mother-in-law, Leandra Montoya Gomez.\r\nJake is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Lydia; his loving daughter, Elaine Lucero and her husband Dr. Dennis Lucero; devoted son, Jake Martinez; grandchildren, Tom Lucero and Heather Lucero of New York; great grandchildren, Taylor and Lily; his loving caregiver, Elia Diaz and her husband Jorge; sister, Aggie Trujillo and her husband Anselmo; brothers-in-law, Pete Gomez and wife Lucille, Gus Gomez and wife Charlotte; sisters-in-law, Frances Quintana, Viola Salazar and husband Henry; Flora Martinez and husband Leo and Helen Gomez of Mcallen, Texas. Jake had many close nieces, nephews and friends. Ms. Lucille Valdez was a devoted friend.\r\nJake attended Española Valley High School where he was known as a star athlete. After high school, he spent 3 years in the U.S. Navy where he was stationed on the USS Kenton. He logged over 71,000 miles in the Pacific during World War II. He was very proud of his time in the Navy. After his honorable discharge, he studied to be a barber in Pueblo, Colorado. He barbered, in his beloved Española community until he was 82 years of age and was known as “Jake the Barber”. Jake loved woodworking and enjoyed making ladders, tables, picture frames, and the very special desk for his grandson, Tom. As a generous man, he often gave away all of his wooden creations.\r\nThe Martinez family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Murray Ryan, his physician for many years. Joseph Martinez who assisted Jake and Lydia during their time of need. Much gratitude to Advanced Health Care of Albuquerque for the time they spent working with our husband and father. Finally, Ambercare Hospice and their staff for making Jake's last days very special.\r\nPublic visitation will begin on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Memorial mass will be celebrated on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Española. Burial to follow at 12:45 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Leroy Salazar, Dennis Lucero, Tom Lucero, Heather Lucero, Leo Martinez, Tony Martinez, Peter Gomez, and Bobby Quintana. Honorary pallbearers named are, Pete Gomez, Henry Salazar, Gus Gomez, and Johnny Silva. The family of Jake Martinez has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
