Isaac Virgil Atencio, a resident of Santa Nino passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 77. He was born on April 29, 1939 and passed away on November 27, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents Miguel Antonio and Cordelia Atencio, his dear Aunts Grace Atencio and Simodosea (Vidal) Martinez. His paternal grandparents Epifanio and Gregorita (Gomez) Atencio and maternal grandparents Mauricio and Mariana (Serna) Garcia.   He is survived by his wife of 57 years Lydia Atencio. His children Yvonne Montoya (Yancy), Carmella Cordova (David) Isaac Atencio Jr. (Marlene), his grandchildren Rebecca, Jenny, Katlin, Kristopher, Lauren, Amanda and Lea; siblings sister Emilia Atencio O.P., Willie (Glorianna) Atencio and Eugene Phillip Atencio; mother in-law, Adelia Valdez; sisters in-laws, Claudina Salazar (Andrew) and Mabel Valdez; brothers in-law, Richard Valdez (Ruby) and Delano Valdez and many numerous relatives.
He was a devoted family man who took great pride in his family and faith.  He was a good friend to many and always greeted everyone with his handsome smile.  He was a member of the La Santa Cruz de la Canada parish. He was an avid farmer who enjoyed his garden and taking care of his cows. He was also well known as the Mayordomo of the Herrera Ditch.  During his working days he worked and managed supermarkets in Taos, Espanola and Los Alamos. As a child he attended Holy Cross School and graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1958. The Atencio family is grateful for all the help and support received from family and friends during his brief illness.  In lieu of flowers please make all donation to Holy Cross School. A rosary will be recited on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Canada. Mass of Christian  Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Canada. Burial will follow at a later date. Serving the family as pallbearers, Kristopher Cordova, David Cordova, Yancy Montoya, Armando Lucero, Mark Valerio, and Tim Pacheco, honorary Pallbearers are his grandchildren. The family of Isaac Atencio has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley. 505-747-7477
