HORACE “CUTIE” MONTOYA, 79, a resident of Española, passed away on Friday, July 15, 2016 following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eudalia “Lala” Gonzales; parents, Silviano and Esquipula Montoya-Romero; step-father, Margarito Romero; children, Karen Martinez, Betty, Lillian, Donald, Phillip and Gene Gonzales; grandchildren, Leon and Dion Gonzales, Shaylen and Harold Romero; brother, Juan Montoya; sisters, Francis Cantrell, Lorenza Maez and Isabel Abeyta. In 1971, Horace met Lala, they would spend the next 43 years together. He loved her and her family so very much. Together they raised 4 of their grandchildren, Kathleen Martinez, Leon Gonzales, Adrian Velarde and Nicole Gonzales. He was a retired electrician from the New Mexico Department of Transportation. Mr. Montoya is survived by his children, Angie Trujillo and husband Charlie of Chimayo, Judy Romero and husband Frankie of Cordova, Anthony Gonzales and wife Annette of Española and Manuel Gonzales and wife Margaret of Chimayo; sister, Eva Gurule and husband Levi, Della Martinez; God-children, Nicole Gonzales, Jenay Martinez and Nelson Romero; 60 grandchildren and great-grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 6:00p.m. in the Chapel of Peace of DeVargas Funeral Home with a wake service to follow at 7:00p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 10:30a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Española. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 9:45a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers, Matthew Duran, Frankie Romero, Walter Rodriguez, Randy Gurule, Charlie Trujillo and Mario Gurule. Honorary pallbearers, Orlando Martinez, Joe Espinoza and all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
