Herman Atilano Manzanares Sr., 84, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the early morning of May 28, 2016. He died as he lived with his beloved wife, Fidelia Eleanor, by his side. Herman was born to Rosana Suazo Manzanares and Maximiño Manzanares in Los Silvestres (Abiquiu) on November 16, 1931. He was one of ten children and grew up on his family ranch in Abiquiu. He married Fidelia Eleanor Maes in 1956 and together, they made their life on the same ranch for nearly sixty years surrounded by the beauty of the area and their loving children, and later, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Rosana & Maximiño; his beautiful daughters, Maxine Manzanares & Dr. Patricia Manzanares- Gonzales; and his siblings, Bennie Manzanares, Mary Manzanares, Beatrice Vigil, Joe Manns, Max Manzanares, Alice Miller, and Morris Manzanares.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Fidelia Eleanor and their four sons: Herman Jr. & Pamela Manzanares and their children, Shae, Tyrel and Maxine of Abiquiu; Daniel & Eleanora Manzanares and their son, Fermín of Los Silvestres; David & Andie Manzanares and their son, Maximiño of Santa Fe; Michael Manzanares and his children Isabella, Isaac, Andrew, Lelia, Savannah Manzanares and Chris and Darren Speight of Los Alamos. Herman Manzanares served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a police officer for the city of Santa Fe, a corrections officer for the NM State Penitentiary and he retired from the Espanola Public Schools where he worked for many years. He also served on the Abeyta-Trujillo Ditch Commission for 40 years. He was a member of the Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Posse Company B. Ultimately, he was a rancher and maintained the ranching lifestyle throughout his lifetime.
His greatest joy was his wife and family, to whom he was deeply devoted. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle (Tio) and friend. He was a teacher and left us the greatest gifts of his knowledge. He was a musician and he touched his family and so many people throughout his life with his music. He led the choir at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Abiquiu for many years; he played countless rosaries, funerals, weddings and community events. Herman Manzanares was a cowboy and lived his life on his own terms. We will miss him and love him forever.
May the blessing of God be upon you,
The blessing of the Father and the Son (and the Mother);
And may the spirit of God, the spirit of love and peace
go with you on your way.
