Herardo Alcario "Al" - Age 88 - La Jiron

Herardo Alcario “Al” Jiron, 88, resident of La Mesilla, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Friday, October 10, 2014. Al was born in Antonito, CO on April 23, 1926 to Alcario and Belinda Jiron. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Paul Lobato. Al is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Josina Jiron; children, Inez Leibman and husband Chris of Santa Fe, Albert Jiron and wife Sharon of La Mesilla and Daniel Jiron of Albuquerque; his beloved grandchildren, Maria Orona, Laureana Jiron, Andres Jiron and Kaylee Jiron; sisters, Viola Lobato of Antonito, CO and Carmie Carlsen of Beverly Hills, CA; nieces, Belinda Romero and husband Fred of Simi Valley CA and Gina Dillon of Santa Fe; nephew, Bobby Carlsen and wife Sarah of CA and numerous other relatives for which he cared for deeply. Al graduated from Antonito H.S. in 1943 and was called to serve his country in 1945. He then attended Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Pharmacy and became a licensed pharmacist in Nebraska, Colorado and New Mexico. His five decade career as a pharmacist began in Antonito and included stops in Los Alamos, Trinidad, Espanola, Santa Fe, Las Vegas and Pojoaque. In 1965, he opened Fairview Pharmacy and owned it for 19 years. Al also served on the New Mexico Board of Pharmacy under two Governors and held a NM real estate broker’s license. Al was most content and at peace at his cabin in Las Trampas where he loved to hike and relax. He enjoyed traveling, reading and his animals, especially his beloved PooJay. Al was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. Public visitation will begin on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh. Burial will take place on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Gerald Maestas, Rick Mascarenas, Stephen Montoya, Dan Trujillo, Gerald Quintana and Larry Quintana. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Archuleta, Vernon Gutjahr, Andres Jiron, Jose Martinez, Samuel D. Martinez, Johnny Montoya and Herman Ortiz. The family of Herardo Alcario “Al” Jiron has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
