Helene M. Emery, 91, a long-time resident of Los Alamos, died at Sombrillo Nursing Home in Los Alamos on October 6, 2014 of natural causes.\r\nShe was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Emery in 2001. She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Deborah Heath of Las Cruces, and DyAnne Short and her husband Tom of Los Alamos. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Olivia Heath, Camille Heath, Kermit Short and his wife Lucia, and great-grandson Alexander Short.\r\nMrs. Emery moved to Los Alamos from Carlsbad in 1951 and made it her home for the remainder of her life. She cherished living in her Barranca Mesa home for nearly 50 years.\r\nShe was employed by Los Alamos County as a legal and administrative assistant for many years. Helene was known for the wonderful cookies and homemade candies which she shared generously with family, friends, and neighbors. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and was fond of exploring northern New Mexico. She will be remembered for her high degree of intelligence, lively spirit, and quit wit.\r\nShe will also be remembered for the many wonderful parties she gave for her daughters and their friends during their youth. The LAHS sophomore and junior floats were built in her home garage in 1967 and 1968 and she always provided refreshments. She also frequently chaperoned bus trips to various football and basketball games. She was devoted to her daughter’s happiness and welfare.\r\nShe was a keen reader who was never without a stack of books by her side. She was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party and was devoted to environmental causes.\r\nMrs. Emery was fond of all animals and donated to many animal causes as well as The Nature Conservancy and The Wildlife Center. She enriched the lives of those who knew her and will be deeply missed by her family.\r\nCremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.\r\nMemorial donations may be made to the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, 804 W.
