HELEN KAIN SALAZAR , 80, a resident of Española, passed away on Wednesday, April 17th, 2019 from a sudden illness. She drew her final breath as she was surrounded by her loving family. Helen was preceded in death by her son, Michael Kain, her parents, Edward and Adelita Kain, and her brother, Tommy Kain. Helen was very well known and loved for her community service, volunteer work, and philanthropy. Helen served as a past Española City Councilor, as an active member of the Presbyterian Española Hospital Auxiliary, and as a board member for the San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen. Helen was a Eucharistic Minister and a passionate follower of her Christian and Roman Catholic faith. The family wants all to know that the Catholic Church was Helen’s home and Christianity was her world. Helen loved the outdoors, camping, gardening, and animals; Helen was a loyal vassal to her beloved hummingbirds. She will be sorely and greatly missed by those she served and partnered with. Helen is survived by her husband, David, her sons, Kenneth Kain and Eddie Salazar, daughter in laws, Francine Kain and Kathy Salazar, brother, Robert Kain, sister in law, Mellie Kain, and beloved grandchildren, Sarah Salazar, Rachel Salazar, and Marcus Ortega Johnson. Public visitation will begin on Wednesday, April 24th at 6:00pm in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory in Española with a rosary to be recited at 7:00pm. The Funeral will be celebrated on Thursday, April 25th at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Santa Cruz, beginning with a rosary at 10:00am and Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30am. The Internment will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 12:45pm with the following serving as pallbearers: Kenneth Kain, Eddie Salazar, Sarah Salazar, Marcus Ortega Johnson, Sergio Meza, and Carlos Ortega III. Honorary pallbearers: Rachel Salazar and Morrie. The family of Helen Kain Salazar would like to thank the staff at Amber Care for the care and attention given to their beloved mother. The family has entrusted Helen’s care to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley.
