Harvey Henry Walters, 89, died Saturday, September 25, 2010, in Santa Fe, New Mexico after a brief illness. Born in Helena, Arkansas March 15, 1921, he married Mary Frances Donahoe of Little Rock, Arkansas while serving in the U.S. Army in 1944. After the war, the couple lived in Richmond, Virginia where Walters worked for the Board of Christian Education, Presbyterian Church.\r\nWalters became Director of Public Relations for that denomination in 1949 in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1953, he became Secretary-Manager of the Georgia Press Association; then Business Manager of the California Newspaper Publishers Association in 1962.\r\nBecause of his work nationally to help smaller newspapers find advertising, he was cited by the National Editorial Association in 1963.\r\nAt the completion of his studies in Atlanta for the Christian ministry, he was commended by the city’s Community Relations Commission for his findings and recommendations to help settle an extended strike of garbage collectors. The study is said to have resulted in many positive changes for the workers.\r\nHe was organizing pastor of St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church, Altamonte Springs, Florida in 1970, and Director of Pastoral Counseling of the Moorings Presbyterian Church, Naples, Florida until he retired in 1987. After retirement, he served churches in Georgia and Virginia.\r\nAlthough serving honorably in the military during World War II, including service in the Pacific, he continued believing that war is no longer an option of behavior for the human family.\r\nHe was a graduate of Georgia Military (now Woodward) Academy, the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Columbia Theological Seminary, and Emory University’s Candler School of Theology.\r\nSurvivors include his wife, Mary Frances Donahoe Walters (Chama, NM); his daughter, Lee White Walters (Chama, NM), his son, John Paul Walters (Tallahassee, FL), his grandson, Luke Bernard Walters Wylie (Chama, NM), his granddaughter, Grayson Lee Walters (Orlando, FL); and his grandson, David Jordan Walters (Princeville, HI).\r\nA memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. at St. Jerome’s Episcopal Church in Chama, NM. \r\nHarvey loved The Church. In honor of his memory, contributions to the church of your choice would be appreciated.\r\nThe family of Harvey Walters has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley. 505-747-7477
