Harold DeHaven

HAROLD VERNON DEHAVEN, 82, a resident of Española, NM, born July 3, 1937 in Garrison, North Dakota, unexpectedly left this earth on Monday, September 16, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Edna DeHaven; in-laws, John W. and Helen Enders; grandmother, Edith Rollie “Toots” and grandfather, William DeHaven “Dazer”, his oldest sons’ mother, Sharon Denise Coffen DeHaven; nieces, Susie and Kristi Belle; brothers, Robert and Marshall (Butch) DeHaven. We can’t even begin to tell you all the wonderful things Hal accomplished in his lifetime. He was a man of many talents. He grew up in Garrison, ND. Attended Garrison schools, farmed with his father and was involved in 4-H. Hal was very honored to be a Garrison Trooper, where he was a member of the 1953 state runner up basketball team and captain of the 1954 undefeated Trooper football team. He graduated Garrison High School in 1955, then attended North Dakota State University. He married Sharon and had his 1st son, Michael in 1962. He went on to earn his degree as an Electrical Technician. He began his illustrious career with Martin Marietta Aerospace Corporation in Denver, Colorado, where he worked on several missile projects. He then went to work for the Los Alamos National Laboratory and worked on many projects that allowed him to travel from coast to coast. Hal met his second wife, Judith, in 1970. They married in 1971 and had 2 children together, Joel and DeAnna. Hal and Judi were married for 48 exciting and adventurous years. He retired from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2001.  He enjoyed spending his leisure time, fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling, spending time with his family and beloved pets. Hal was a life member of the Los Alamos Elks Lodge, B.P.O.E. 2083, RMEF and NRA. Although retirement was enjoyed, Hal always had a desire and drive to work. He returned to the Los Alamos Laboratory and worked with COMPA as a security escort for 17 years. Hal knew no stranger and always left an impression on everyone he met. He is survived by his wife, Judi of Espanola; sons, Michael and companion Joyce Kiemle of Santa Fe, Joel of Albuquerque, daughter, DeAnna and partner, Nicole Palmer of Bernie, MO; granddaughter, Mariah Martinez and fiancé Brian Everett of Chimayo; grandsons, Ayden and Grayson Huey both of Bernie, MO; sisters, Joann Zimmerman of Garrison, ND, Virginia Belle and Marsha Privratsky (Vic) both of Garrison, ND; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Harold will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew him. A memorial service and meal will be held on October 13, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Los Alamos Elks Lodge. Hal’s final resting place will be in Garrison, ND. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the St. Jude Children’s hospital in Harold’s name.
