HAROLD (GERALD) L. MARTINEZ, 72, passed away on Wednesday, October 20, 2010. He was born in Española on June 3, 1938 to Genevieve and Jose Ignacio Martinez who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marie Martinez and companion Marie Angela Salazar; brothers, Horace, Jose and Arthur Martinez; sisters, Martha Martinez, Celine Melendez and Consuelo Quintana. Harold was the first city manager of Española. He also was the Northeast New Mexico Director for H.E.L.P. and worked for the U.S. Department of Labor, the New Mexico Director for Economic Development Administration, Director of Eight Northern Pueblos Economic Development Corp, Director of Cambio Community Business Development program and for the past 17 years developed private business which included farming and real estate development. His passions were farming, fishing, his daughters and his grandchildren. Mr. Martinez is survived by his daughters, Sonya Martinez of Scottsdale, Arizona, Audra Martinez, Angelica Serrano, Felicia Martinez, Candida Martinez and Carmel Martinez; sisters, Beatrice Pineda and Evangeline Martinez and husband Cristobal all of Española; grandchildren, Canisha Hice, Zoe and Zachary Serrano, Donovan and Jesse Martinez, Hailey Rose and Santiago Garcia and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Sunday, October 24, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Monday, October 25, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Española. Burial to follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Joseph Paul Martinez, Lupe Archuleta, Gerard and Jerome Pineda, Christopher Martinez, Steve Serrano, Matthew Carr and Jonathan De Los Santos. Honorary pallbearers named are his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The Martinez family has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.\r\n
