Gregorio Age - 90 - Truchas Lopez

Gregorio Lopez, 90, a lifelong resident of Truchas passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, October 27, 2011, with his family at his side. At the age of 21 Mr. Lopez served in WWII as an Infantryman/Mortarman. After basic training, in Robinson Arkansas, he was shipped to Monticelli, Italy and participated in the EAME Theater of Operation. In defense of crew members, against enemy approach, he aimed and fired 60mm Mortars, during which time he was injured. Throughout this engagement he continued to defend friendly forces. These honorable actions allowed him to receive numerous military awards including a Purple Heart. He was a Charter member for the last 65 years of American Legion Post 89 in Truchas. A passionate outdoorsman, Mr. Lopez enjoyed working on his ranch with his children at his side. He was also a well-known artisan weaver. He created countless one of a kind sarapes. He shared his unique talent by teaching his weaving methods for a number of years. Gregorio was preceded in death by his parents Faustino and Ninfa Lopez, brother, Aurelio Lopez and grandson David Lopez. Gregorio is survived by his wife of 63 years Ascencionita Lopez. His children; Jimmy Lopez and wife Cruzita, Mary Leyba and companion Beto Flores, Helen Lovato and husband Isaac, Diana Quintana and husband Dennis, Orlando Lopez and wife Priscilla, Ray Lopez and wife Maria Zita, and Jenny Lopez. He also is survived by 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Frutosa Lopez; special nephews: Eddie, Jake and Jerry Lopez; special nieces: Lori Lopez and Lucille Montoya. A devotional will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel at DeVargas. Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 31, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel at DeVargas with interment to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 12:45 p.m. with the following serving as pallbearers will be: Ronnie Lovato, Kenneth Lovato, Carlos Lopez, Anthony Quintana, Mario Martinez and Adam Martinez; honorary pallbearers; April and Marie Layba, Annadelle and Nicole Valdez, Janelle Lopez, Tamara Lovato, Christy Quintana and Amanda Lopez, IsIs Lopez.
