George Grant Hill, age 87, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, August 27, 2017. George was born on April 19, 1930 in Lisbon Falls, Maine. He attended the University of Maine, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1952, George married the love of his life, Donna Lord. George and Donna had two children; David and Kathryn (Kathy). They lived in St. Albans, West Virginia for eight years where he worked for Union Carbide Corporation, specializing in Olefin plant design. In 1962, the Hills moved to Los Alamos, NM. George had a long and fulfilling career at Los Alamos National Laboratory; serving as WX-Division Leader prior to his retirement.
George loved being outdoors. He was an avid hunter and skier. The Hills spent much of their free time backpacking in the Northern New Mexico wilderness with their horses and dogs. George was involved in many groups in the Los Alamos community, including Pajarito Mountain Ski Patrol and the Sheriff’s Posse. During their later years, George and Donna enjoyed traveling the country in their motor-home with their dogs and cats.
His wife, Donna Hill, and daughter, Kathryn Matzke, preceded George in death. George is survived by his son, David Hill of Guachupangue, NM; son-in-law, James Matzke of Los Alamos, NM; granddaughter Shannon Blaylock and husband Joe Blaylock of Los Alamos, NM; grandson Kevin Matzke and wife Cristina Rubio of San Diego, CA; granddaughter Kelly Matzke and fiancé Miguel González of Madrid, Spain; great-grandsons Jackson and Jase Blaylock; and great-granddaughter Aurora Matzke-Rubio; along with countless friends and extended family members.
To honor George, a small graveside ceremony will be held for family and close friends at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos, NM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Los Alamos Friends of the Shelter or the charity of your choice. The family of George Hill has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley. 505-747-7477-www.devargasfuneral.com
