Genoveva Martinez

Genoveva Lucero Martinez, was called to be with our Lord on Wednesday March 23, 2016 she passed peacefully at home at the age of 103. Genoveva (Veva) was the lively matriarch of the Martinez family who filled her home with memories, stories about the old days, laughter, love for her family and love of cooking, no one ever left Grandma Veva’s house hungry. Veva was preceded in death by her loving husband Sigfredo Martinez on July 19, 2003, a son, Luis Martinez, a daughter Oralia Martinez, three grandsons, Daniel Martinez, Allen Martinez and Kevin Martinez and one Great Grandson, Derrick Montoya.   She was born October 18, 1912 in Llano de San Juan, New Mexico to Jose de Gracia and Excelsita Lucero.   Sigfredo and Genoveva were married on August 30, 1940 and had 8 children. In addition to raising her family and working on her fields and orchards at her home in Chimayo, New Mexico, Veva also worked as a cook for the schools and at The Rancho de Chimayo.
Genoveva is survived by her children; Helen Ann Griego of Albuquerque, NM, Horace Martinez and Priscilla Silva of Santa Fe, NM, Mary Franceschina of Chimayo, NM, Joe and Louella Martinez of Albuquerque, NM, Dan and Evelyn Martinez of Chimayo, NM, and Marie O. Martinez of Chimayo, NM who was also Genoveva’s caretaker and constant companion in her last years, grandchildren; Patrick, Debbie, Lisa Mae and Louie Jr. Martinez, Dyanne and Issacc Baca, Angela, Adrian and Denise Martinez, Edward Franeschina III, James, Adam and Joshua Martinez, Genevieve(Ernest) Maldonado, Gabriel and Jeremiah Martinez, Eric J.(Delubina) and Gary C. Montoya, 19 Great grandchildren and many other family and friends including special nephews and Niece, The Lucero Family, who very often took time to visit with Veva.
A family viewing will be held on Sunday March 27, 2016 at 4:00 PM at DeVargas Funeral home, a public visitation to follow at 4:30, with a Rosary to be recited at 5:00.   Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday March 28, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Church with a burial to follow at The Potrero Cemetery in Chimayo, NM.  Serving the family as Pallbearers will be Eric J. Montoya, Gary C. Montoya, Adam Martinez, Jeremiah Martinez, Gabriel Martinez, Lisa Mae Martinez, Albert Lucero, and Justin Montoya. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be; Edward Franceshina III, Adrian Martinez, Joshua Martinez, Kayla Montoya, Monique Curley, Fabian Montoya, and Dionico Montoya.
