GENEVIEVE MARTINEZ, our “Gem”, a resident of Española, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 after fighting a bout with cancer. She was born on July 12, 1928 in Santa Rita, NM. She attended and graduated from Hurley High School in 1947 and went on to Business College in Albuquerque from 1948 to 1950. In 1951 she married Paul C. Martinez of Española until his death in June 1995.\r\nIn 1950 she was employed in Los Alamos at the A.E.C. Department and worked in the Department of Energy for 30 years where she acquired several special achievement awards for her outstanding performance as a Budget Analyst in the Contracts, Finance and Support Branch. She retired in 1995 to take care of her ailing husband, after his death she went back to work as a consultant for 5 more years. For several years she served as secretary to the community Chest Amigos del Valle and Bowling League in Santa Fe and Española. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed hunting and fishing with dear friends and family; enjoyed poker with her husband’s cousins in each of their homes. She belonged to the Confradia de la Sagrada Familia and also did volunteer work for the Catholic Church.\r\nMrs. Martinez is survived by her sister, Cori Shannon; niece, Mary Y. Pike both of Las Vegas, Nevada; nephews, Mark Sandoval of Anaheim, CA, Pat Martinez, Johnny and Fred, Jr. of Española; sisters-in-law: Annie Urban of Albuquerque, Mae and Tessie Martinez of Española; and numerous other relatives and friends. Public visitation will be held on Monday, April 1, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the San Jose Catholic Church in Hernandez. Burial to follow at 12:45 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Patrick Martinez, John and Fred Romero, Pat Gonzales, Rudy Martinez and Henry Castillo. Honorary pallbearers named are, Larry Ulibarri and Gloria Chavez. The family of Genevieve Martinez have entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
