Gene Paul Collatz - R.I.P May 4, 1932 - May 24, 2015
After 27 years of knowing Gene Paul Collatz, we say goodbye. When Dan and I met Gene he was in a deplorable condition, living like a hermit. He would say he didn't exist. After spending some time with Gene I was able to understand what he meant.
For 29 years he was lost in governmental bureaucracy. It took me, along with the help of a compassionate VA and Red Cross person, almost 2 years to prove that Gene Paul Collatz not only existed, but he served this country through two tours in Korea, and had two enlistments in the U.S. Army.
Gene had been exposed to radiation when told to stand up and face a nuclear explosion at White Sands testing grounds in New Mexico, he woke up in a military hospital some two weeks later. After 27 years of observation, including the last 15 years taking care of him, I believe that his exposure was responsible for his many limitations and confused mental state.
Gene was one of the original members of the Dare To Dream Network, Veterans in Politics and a lifetime member of the VFW. He is survived by his daughter, Ruth Kenton, and granddaughter, Regan, who live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
We like to thank St. Vincent De Paul Church in Abiquiu for the kind donation towards the burial services for Gene.
May your soul find peace with the Creator.
