Fredie Nelson Farnsworth

Fredie Nelson Farnworth, 88, beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather, decided to celebrate the New Year in heaven. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on January 1, 2018.

Fredie was born in Klamath, CA, in 1929 in a small Indian village where his parents were missionaries. He always told the story that an Indian midwife delivered him, held him up,  and made a pronouncement in her native tongue (which he would quote). When we asked him what that meant, he would said, “That is one ugly baby!”

He married his wife Maxine in Tulsa, OK, in 1951. They came to Los Alamos with their two daughters in 1961. He worked as an electromechanical tech with LANL after his best friend Harold Lederer had moved here from Tulsa and raved about the beautiful scenery and fantastic hunting and fishing.

Fredie was a proud member of the United States Air Force, where he served 3 years with the 61st M & S Sq., 61st Troop Carrier Group during the time of the Berlin Airlift.

His unconventional sense of humor left his listeners wondering if the stories he told were actually true or a fabrication inflicted upon his innocent grandchildren and the gullible.

At parties and campouts he would delight everyone by singing and playing “Jesus took the Want-to Out of Me” on his beloved saw. He loved hunting, fishing and the beautiful New Mexico Mountains.

God and his church were always of utmost importance in Fredie’s life; he was a respected Bible teacher throughout his adult life.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Sybil Maxine Ray; his parents Amanda and Thurlow Charles Farnsworth; his sister Avis Metpelink; and brothers Glen and Thurlow Charles (Chuck) Farnsworth Jr.

He is survived by his brother James Farnsworth and wife Marijke; his daughters Cheryl Lynne Casson and Karen Jean Dyson; grandchildren Jeremiah Dyson, Kasey Schick Harris, Kimber Dyson Taylor, Kristen Dyson, and Aaron Atencio; and great grandchildren Jada and Jyllian Harris; Kyana, Emma, and Julie Dyson; and Timothy and James Taylor, as well as his beloved cat Samson.

Private interment will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery. A public celebration and memorial of his life will be held on Saturday, January 6, at 1:00 pm at New Beginnings Fellowship, 112 East Rd., Los Alamos, NM. The family of Fredie Nelson Farnsworth has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley.
