Fabiola M. Vigil, age 85 a lifelong resident of Chimayo, passed away peacefully at her home the morning of March 15, 2014 holding Anastacio’s hand. Fabiola was born on September 6, 1928. She was preceded in death by her parents, Apolonio and Celestina Martinez; in-laws, Canuto and Augustina Vigil; her 3 day old infant daughter and her son Melvin. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Abad and wife Fina, Vences and wife Virginia, and Sigfredo Martinez ; sisters-in-law, Alicia, Jane, and Flora Martinez, and Viola Cordova; brothers-in-law, John R. Trujillo, George and Gerson Vigil and Adriano Martinez . Fabiola is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Anastacio and 4 wonderful children, Beverly and companion Eric Shockey, Lorraine and husband Eric Vigil, Jack Vigil and wife Evelyn Garcia and Barbara and husband Randy Montoya; 8 grandchildren: Monica Aragon and husband Michael, Fernando Vigil and wife Julie, Lorenzo Martinez and wife Jessica, Vanessa Montoya and companion Rita, Kevin Montoya and companion Sabrina , Ana Vigil and companion Cruz , Marco Vigil and companion Devon and Erica Vigil; great-grandchildren include, Leonardo, Diego, and Micheala Aragon, Anastacio and Ariana Martinez, Josef and Ivan Vigil, Neveah Montoya; brothers, Robert E., Ascencion and Arsenio Martinez; sister, Matilde Trujillo; sister-in-law, Eliza Martinez, and Genoveva Martinez, and her dearest friends, Augustina Romero and sister Telma Gomez as well as numerous loving relatives and friends. Fabiola along with her husband, Anastacio, always strived to be the best parents to their children, ensuring they got a good education, all the while being active members in their church and community. Fabiola graduated from Santa Cruz High School at the time when the school was run by the Dominican sisters. Later in life she attended Highlands University and the Paraprofessional Institute from Bueno center in Colorado where she pursued an associate’s degree in Bilingual Multicultural and Communication skills. Her church activities were numerous and varied. She was an active member of the Holy Family Parish, where she served in different ministries. She was a lector. She volunteered for communion service at the Espanola Valley Nursing and Rehab. She visited the elderly and homebound. She was an active and loyal member of the Altar and Rosary Society for 43 years and actually helped to organize the society in its formative years. She was a member of El Coro de la Sagrada Familia since 1963 and served as Celadora for many years. She served the church community under 18 different priests/pastors. Her working career also took different and various paths. She worked at the Driver’s License Division, The State Engineer Interstate Stream Commission, Rancho de Chimayo, having been one of the first cooks and her last employment was a bilingual teacher’s aide for the Chimayo Elementary School. Upon her retirement from the school, she was awarded the Achievement award, best teacher’s aide and a plaque of appreciation for her 19 years of dedication to the staff and students. Her hobbies included gardening, painting, sewing, embroidering, crocheting and of course traveling. She and Anastacio were known for their national and international travel whether it would be by land, sea or air. Public visitation will begin on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church, with a burial to follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
