Esequiel Romero, age 82, a resident of Rio Lucio was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away peacefully at his home after a lengthy illness on April 12, 2014. He was born on March 10, 1932. He was preceded in death by his loving daughter Aileen Romero; parents, Aduato and Cleofas Romero, parents in-law, Felisandro and Juanita Rodriguez. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Orlinda Romero; daughters, Dolores Atencio (Edwin), Rosemary Fernandez (George), Rachael Valdez (Friend-Wayne); six grandchildren, Jessica Atencio (Raymond), Amy Archuleta (Alex), Harvey Fernandez (Genevieve), Guillermo Atencio (Heather), Jonathan Fernandez (Kristina), Victor Atencio (Amy), and 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Angelica Rodriguez, Frances Romero, Matilde Romero (Moises), brother, Juan Romero (Georgia); sister-in-laws, Mariquita Romero (Octavio), Carolina Rodriguez, brothers-in-law, Paul Rodriguez (JoAnn), Rueben Rodriguez; very dear and close cousin and compadre, Eli Romero (Faby), he is also survived by numerous relatives and friends. Esequiel retired from the U.S. Army as a SFC and he also retired from the U.S. forest service. He was a hard worker all his life and he also enjoyed carving which he was very good at. A public visitation will begin on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at the San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church in Penasco, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 7:00 a.m. at San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church in Penasco, officiated by Father Simeon Wimmershoff. Burial to follow at 9:45 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, with the following serving as pallberarers, Jonathan Fernandez, Harvey Fernandez, Alex Archuleta, Victor Atencio, Guillermo Atencio, Daniel Abeyta, Rueben Rodriguez, and Manuel Rodriguez, honorary pallbearers are his 14 great-grandchildren. The family of Esequiel Romero has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
