ERNESTO M. CHAVEZ, 72, a resident of Chimayo, passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2011 following a lengthy illness. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army being stationed in Germany. He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Chavez; parents, Manuel and Victoria Chavez; very close brother, Phil Chavez; brothers, Roberto and Nestor Chavez; sisters, Estefanita Vigil, Mary Sandoval and Odelia Duran; father-in-law, Flavio Armijo; very close friend, Reyes Martinez and close brother-in-law, Daniel Pacheco. Mr. Chavez is survived by his wife, Viola Chavez; daughter, Valerie and Rick Martinez; beloved grandson whom he adored, Alejandro Martinez; sisters, Rosina Pacheco of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Zulema Harvey of Santa Fe; beloved nephew, Manuel Chavez of Lawndale, California; sisters-in-law, Flora Chavez of Lawndale, California and Angie Valdez and husband Robert of Chimayo; brother-in-law, Ruben Sandoval of Chimayo and Benjamin Duran of Santa Cruz; mother-in-law, Josefina Armijo; special and dear friends, Dan and Mickie Medina of Chimayo and numerous other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Monday, January 10, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo. Burial to follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Rick Martinez, Jesse Cordova, Tony Vigil, Robert Valdez, Dennis Chavez and Manuel Chavez. Honorary pallbearers named are, Alejandro Martinez and Dan and Mickie Medina. The Chavez family has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
