ERMENDA MARTINEZ, 82, a lifelong resident of Chimayo, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Ermenda was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Gonzalo Martinez; parents, Narciso Baca and Magdalena Montoya; step-father, Aniseto Montoya; brothers, Silviano Baca and Ben Montoya; sisters, Rosario Vigil and Elena Fresquez. Ermenda married Gonzalo when she was very young and traveled with him throughout New Mexico making many friends wherever they lived. She was an avid quilt-maker and gifted many friends and relatives with beautiful quilts. She also loved canning fruit from her fruit trees, gardening and raking her yard on a daily basis. Her family looked forward to her delicious “pastelitos” and tortillas. More than anything, though, she loved going to the casino. Her eyes would light up when she told you how she “almost won the mega!” She was extremely funny and always made her family laugh with her stories. They will forever treasure the memories, her facial expressions and her unique joyful laugh. Mrs. Martinez is survived by her sons, Paul Martinez (Karen), Sammy Martinez (Janice); daughters, Vivian Martinez Bossert (James) and Delma Martinez. She was blessed with grandchildren, Ashleigh Martinez, Paul G. Martinez, Jr. (Caryn) and their daughters, Brynn, Elena and KelleyAnn, Marcos Roybal (Sasha) and their sons, Aaden and Jonathan, Manuel Martinez (Claudia) and children, Thalia and Elias, Felicia Rafael and children, Samantha and Szandor, Adam Martinez; daughters, Julia, Jayla and Christina, Michael Martinez, children, Mikayla and Andrew, Marty Martinez, Jr., children, Brandon, Tommy, Matthew and Dayanara; sister, Rosenda Martinez and many close nieces, nephews and many “casino” friends. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo. The family of Ermenda Martinez has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
