Elvira Age - 78 Chamita Mascareñas

Elvira Mascareñas, 78, a former resident of Chamita who now resided in Ohkay Owingeh passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2011 after a brief and sudden illness. Elvira was well respected and revered by all that knew her from her days of being a cook at San Juan Elementary in the early 80’s. Her strong Catholic upbringing and faith never left her. Her daily Catholic duties consisted of her praying the rosary in remembrance of all that had passed on and those that she thought needed prayer. Elvira was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Robert Mascareñas; son, Larry Mascareñas; parents, Amadeo and Rosita Salazar; brother, Arthur Salazar; sister, ClaraBelle Martinez. She was also preceded in death by her in-laws, Pantaleon and Romanita Mascareñas; sister-in-law, Mary Gonzales; brother-in-law, Horace Mascareñas; a very close nephew, Edward Quintana Jr. Elvira is survived by a son, Wally Mascareñas of Chamita; daughter, Janice Mascareñas of Ohkay Owingeh. She is also survived by her grandchildren who were very dear to her, Angelo, Gabriel, Tamara, and Alicia Abeyta, Jacobo and Marissa Mascareñas, and Sandra and Alejandro Mascareñas; sister, Rosemary Lopez and husband Charles of Rio Rancho; brother-in-law, David Martinez of Velarde; a very close niece, Sennie Quintana and husband Edward of Cuartelas; sisters-in-law: Della Trujillo and husband Jerry of Chimayo, Diedrie Valdez and husband John of Tierra Azul; many nieces, nephews, and many other relatives & friends. Public visitation will begin on Tuesday, march 22, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh. Burial to follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Angelo and Gabriel Abeyta, Jacobo and Alejandro Mascareñas, Charles Lopez and Jerry Gonzales; honorary pallbearers: Dean and Pam Martinez, Porfie Duran, Kevin Abeyta, Carlos Lovato, Donald Martinez, and the Velarde Valley Fire Department.
