Eliza Gutierrez Farrar, 97, a lifelong resident of Velarde, passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2018. Eliza was preceded in death by her parents, Maria Luz and Fidel Gutierrez; husband, Roy Farrar; son, Roy Farrar Jr.; siblings, Emma Godfrey (Oddie), Anita Garcia (Frank), Ernesto Gutierrez (Margaret), Ageda Middleton (Max), Mary Ancheta (Henry), Ray Gutierrez (Josephine) and Zoriada Ortega (Eulogio). Eliza attended Velarde Elementary Mission School and McCurdy High School. After high school she enrolled in business school in Albuquerque, New Mexico. During her schooling World War II broke out. She dropped out of her studies and enlisted in the Woman’s Army Corps. During the War she served in England and Germany and witnessed the bombing of London by the German air force. Eliza was best known in the Española Valley for the family apple packing business. Along with her husband Roy, they owned and operated the Velarde Apple Shed. They bought apples from local growers, processed the apples and shipped them to grocers all over the country. After the apple season they continued their business in Texas and Mexico where they packed and sold tomatoes. Eliza and Roy also raised fruit in their orchard in Velarde now named Rancho La Jolla and operated by their son Danny. Eliza is survived by her sons, Danny and Jeffrey; granddaughter, Amanda; grandson, Christopher and wife Rachel; great-grandchildren, Raquel, Raymond and Domenic; brothers, Samuel (Isabel), Fidel (Angelina) and Mark. Memorial Service will be celebrated on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory. A private burial service will be held at a later date.
