Edward A. "Brownie" - Santa Fe Brown

d. September 24, 2014

Edward A. Brown, “Brownie”, passed away at home on Wednesday, September 24, 2014. He was born in Anniston, Alabama, on October 23, 1924 to the late William Herbert Brown and Myrtle L. Brown. He was raised in Alabama and joined the Navy. He served 11 years in active duty as Lieutenant Commander and continued in the active reserves until he retired after 20 years. He served three, 9 month tours on an aircraft carrier, the Boxer, during the Korean War. His service after the war included being an instructor at the officer’s candidate school in Newport Beach. He received a math degree from Tulane University and a Masters in Electrical Engineering.\r\nBrownie met Marty in Oakland California while in the Navy and they married 3 months later. They were married for 68 years. Brownie and Marty moved to Albuquerque, NM, in 1956, where he worked for Sandia Labs. They moved to Los Alamos in 1959 as Dad began his career at LANL. He was instrumental in many activities and inventions, multiple trips to Area 51, flew on the Concord to document the eclipse of the sun, and was group leader of N4 division. He retired in 1980.\r\nAfter retirement, Brownie and Marty traveled for the winters to Queenstown, NZ. It was in NZ that he became catholic and was very active in the church there as well as the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Los Alamos. He was a great fisherman and had many adventures deep sea fishing in Mexico aboard his boat, “Amigo Del Mar”. He was a great hunter as well of antelope, deer, and quail. \r\nBrownie was very much a family man with hiking, skiing, tennis, ping pong, picnics at Bandelier, and the master of breakfast with omelets and pancakes. He had a successful career and traveled extensively but his deepest love was for his family. He adopted two children, Phillip Allen Brown and Amy Brown Olcott, and truly was their father as well as to his late son Richard Rand Brown. But most of all, is the wonderful love story he lived with Marty. They have been such an inspiration to us all.\r\nBrownie is survived by wife, Martha Ann Brown; son, Phillip Brown, daughter, and son-in-law, Amy and Neal Olcott, daughter-in-law, Christy Brown; grandchildren, Shea LeBrun, Monty Brown, Brandon Olcott, Kristen Olcott; great-grandchildren, Orion Olcott, Victor Olcott, Ashlin Brown, Senna LeBrun, multiple nieces and nephews, and many great friends. He was a great friend and mentor to many and loved by all.\r\nMass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos, with a burial to follow at 11:15 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. A reception will be held in Santa Fe immediately following the service at the cemetery. Address to be disclosed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made at the American Cancer Society.
