Duane Burnside, 78, a longtime Chama resident and homebuilder passed away on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at Christus Saint Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe. Duane was born in 1932 at Pawnee, Oklahoma. His dad was a carpenter and moved the family to Idaho, Oregon & California to find work wherever he could during those early years. Duane moved back to Oklahoma to attend Oklahoma A & M University. He enlisted into the United States Air Force where as a first lieutenant; he was a pilot enjoying flying the world. After leaving the Air Force he moved to Albuquerque in 1957 where he built his first home. In the next 54 years as a homebuilder; Duane built over 2,300 homes for New Mexicans. His homes are in Albuquerque, Carlsbad, Roswell, Santa Fe and of course, Chama. While living in Albuquerque, Duane served on bank boards and was active in the NM Homebuilders Association. As an avid outdoorsman, Duane was fortunate to travel to Africa, Alaska, Central America and British Columbia. Fishing, hunting, flying and Chama were his passions. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 23 years, Dianne of Chama, three daughters, Becky Burnside of Seattle Washington, Michele Teague of Hurst, Texas, Shannon Ferry Moser of Arlington, Texas; 3 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services are pending. The family of Duane Burnside have entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley. 505-747-7477
