Dr. Epifania “Eppie” Archuleta, 92, passed away on Friday, April 11, 2014 at the Española Hospital. She was born on January 6, 1922 in Santa Cruz. Eppie grew up in Northern New Mexico, daughter of Agueda and Eusebio Martinez. Her family came from a long line of weavers. She married Francisco Archuleta in October of 1940. The started their family in New Mexico and later moved to Capulin, CO. In addition to raising eight children and helping her husband farm and ranch, Eppie became an accomplished weaver. She was recognized with several honors and awards including the 1985 National Heritage Fellowship and the 1985 National Endowment for the Art’s highest award. Her weaving is on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institute and she was profiled in the January 1991 issue of the National Geographic. She was invited to Bill Clinton’s Inaugural Presidential Ceremony and received an Honorary Doctorate in Arts by Adams State University in 1995. She taught hundreds of students to weave and people from all over the world have purchased her weavings. Well known specially in the State of Colorado. Eppie found comfort in her strong Catholic Faith and in her later life spent many hours praying for her loved ones. She is survived by her children, Norma (Levi) Medina, Frank (Yvonne), Phil (Lila), Gabriel (Patsy), Linda, Fernandez (Jennie), Nicholas (Lorraine), and Tobias (Katerie), sisters, Georgia, Louisa, Cordilia and Ruby; brother, Secondino; 54 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. Public visitation will begin on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Abiquiu. Burial to follow at the San Antonio Catholic Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Dominic Lafayette, Donathon, Danny, Jownes, Nicholas Archuleta, and Roy Sisneros. Honorary pallbearers will be all her grandchildren and a very close sister, Cordilia. The family of Epifania Archuleta has entrusted their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.\r\n
