DOMITILA M. ORTIZ, 89, a resident of Chimayo, passed away of a lengthy Illness on Saturday, October 31, 2015 surrounded by her family and her Guardian Angel Nathaniel Ortiz who was with her day and night until her passing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Diego Ortiz Sr.; daughter, Jeanette Maestas; parents, Manuel and Lorencita Velarde; brother, Ben Velarde, sisters, Roselia Velarde and Carlota Velarde Martinez. Domitila was an avid chili grower from Chimayo and loved making ristras. She was a very good cook, and was a dedicated home maker. She is loved and will be missed dearly. Domitila is survived by her children, Rayitos (Rae) Griswold and husband Fred of San Diego CA, Diego E. Ortiz Jr. and companion Francisca Coronado of Chimayo; grandchildren, Nathaniel A. Ortiz, Jonathan S. Ortiz and wife Deanna both of Chimayo, Debbie and Gary Hall of San Diego CA, Gary and Kim Griswold of Mareno Valley CA, Joseph Maestas, Joel Maestas, Justin Maestas, Rhonda Maestas, Roxanne Salazar all of Rio Chama, great-grandchildren, Valerie Hall of San Diego CA, Samantha Griswold of Denver CO, Damian Ortiz of Ojo Caliente, great-great-grandchildren, Ronnie Finley of Denver, Teddy Finley of Denver; sisters, Frances Fresquez of Fairview, Consuelo Martinez of Santa Cruz, Sennie Kaufmin and husband Fritz of Wisconsin, brothers, Epimenic Velarde of Santo Nino, Thomas Velarde of San Pedro, and Manuel Velarde Jr. and wife Sharron of Livermore CA, and many other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A second rosary will be recited on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church with a burial to follow at 10:30 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Serving the family as pallbearers Jonathan Ortiz, Nathaniel Ortiz, Anthony Fresquez and Greg Velarde, honorary pallbearers Patrick Martinez, Joseph Maestas, Curtis Kaufman, Gary Griswold, Joel Maestas and Justin Maestas.
