Delfido Fernandez, age 92, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 3rd, 2014. He was born in Truchas on March 29, 1922, to his parents Margarita Tafoya and Gregorio Fernandez He was preceded in death by his mother in-law Beatriz Dominguez Romero, father-in-law Vidal Romeo, brother Delfino Fernnandez and wife Clorinda, Sister Celina Trujillo and husband Willie, brother-in-law Cosme Romero and wife Carmelita, sister-in-law Amelia Maestas and husband Joe, sister-in-law Teresina Serrano and husband Eduvigen, brother-in-law Ernesto Romero and wife Lucy, nephews Samuel T. Romero, Eliud Fernandez, Wilbur Fernandez, Barney Trujillo, Chris Serrano, Joe Serrano, nieces Lillian Maestas, Velma Abeyta, Angie Martinez and Susie Gurule. At age 11 his mother passed away. His grandparents Jose Del Carmen Tafoya and Juanita Padilla raised him. When he reached the age of 15 he went to work for the Civilian Conservation Corp out of Santa Fe. He worked in different areas, one of which was Bandelier National Park. At 17 years of age he accepted work in Utah working on the railroad. This lasted four months. From there he went to work at Camp Hale, Colorado as a laborer, this time again for four months. He returned to Truchas, New Mexico, and on July 28, 1943, he married the love of his life, Hipolita, in Santa Cruz de la Canada Church. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, July 2013. But to be employed he again had to leave New Mexico this time to work for the New Jersey Zinc Company in Gilman, Colorado mining Zinc and Lead. In 1946, he worked in a ranch in Slater, Colorado and Wyoming. He returned to New Mexico in 1947 and worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for ZIA, PAN AM, Johnson Control, and Johnson Control North (JCNNM), until his retirement in 1988 after 41 years at age 66. He was active in many church activities. He joined the Holy Name Society (an association for men), was part of the hospitality ministry, and received the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary capillita for the monthly visit. He and his wife served numerous times as mayordomos for Our Lady of the Holy Rosary church in Truchas. He farmed pumpkins, chile, corn, beans and other vegetables in his garden. He built his home while holding a full time job at Los Alamos. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Hipolilta Romero Fernandez, daughters Mary Margaret Trujillo and Isabel Ortiz, son Jake Fernandez and wife Veronica. Granddaughters, Tamara Trujillo, and Therese Trujillo. Grandsons Troy Fernandez and James Bristol, Greg Fernandez and fiancé Laura. Jamie Atencio and wife Alexandra, Rosendo Atencio and wife Nicole, Stephanie Martinez and husband Mark. Great grandchildren Alyssa, Reina, Lillyana, Mark Anthony, Joaquin, Lucia, Dominic, Kami, and Presley Rose. Hijados Leroy and Flora Vigil, Mary Helen Kelty, Joseph Ralph Sandoval, Madeline Romero, Silvia Romero, and Laura Ortiz. As well as numerous other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at 6:00pm. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home, with a rosary to follow at 7:00p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 14, 2014 at 10:00am at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Truchas, burial will follow at ‘Los Llanitos’ cemetery in Truchas. Assisting as pallbearers will be, Herbert Romero, Charlie Trujillo, Nelson Trujillo, Abel Garcia, Barney Trujillo, and Donald Romero. Honorary pallbearer Henry Romero. The family of Delfido Fernandez has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home and Crematory of the Espanola Valley. 1-505-747-7477
