Deborah Ann Cantrup, a lifelong resident of Espanola, peacefully passed away at her home on November 23, 2023. Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, she was the daughter of Richard Cook and Shirley Gordon. Debbie graduated from McCurdy High School and pursued her college education at the University of Northern Colorado.
Known for her deep love of animals, Debbie had a compassionate heart and opened her home to numerous stray and injured animals over the years. Her kindness extended beyond the animal kingdom to people in need, showcasing a generosity that defined her character. Her greatest joy in life was found in the company of her family and friends, with whom she shared playful moments, laughter, and an unmistakably mischievous side. Debbie’s infectious laughter added a touch of magic to those around her. She had a passion for sci-fi shows and spy novels; relished good food; enjoyed dancing and rock hunting; loved having people over; and was an avid football fan. She was incredibly loved and will be missed dearly by the many whose lives she touched over the years.
Debbie faced health challenges throughout her life with grace, showing resilience in the midst of adversity. Despite the difficulties, she remained determined to make the best of her situation.
Debbie is survived by her daughters, Lisa and Chelsea Cantrup, also her former husband and father of her daughters, Peter Cantrup, as well as her grandchildren (who affectionately called her Debbie-Mom), Peter, Corinne, and Hunter. The family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Debbie’s honor to the New Mexico Wildlife Center.
Private Services will be taking place by the family.
