C. Gordon Hoffman passed away on August 10, 2012 at the age of 98.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Betty Ruth Mitchell Hoffman; his siblings: Golda, Janice, Wendell and David and all twenty of his first cousins. He is survived by his two children: Joe and Roberta; his four grandchildren: Jessica Hoffman, Bettie Jo Hoffman Basinger, Jean Merchant Chaplin, Donald Edward Merchant and four great-grandchildren: Mia Betty Chaplin, Alexander Roy Chaplin, Abigail Josie Merchant and Emma Elizabeth Merchant.\r\n Mr. Hoffman graduated from Simpson College and was awarded a Master's degree in Metallurgy from North Dakota State.\r\n Mr. Hoffman fully experienced and helped to create the unprecedented 20th century technology boom, moving from studying by kerosene lamp on the farm where he grew up, to working on nuclear powered projects at LANL.\r\n Mr. Hoffman was a resident of Los Alamos for 56 years and was a staff member at LANL. He was a member of the American Society for Metals and served in various capacities including chapter president,\r\n Mr. Hoffman was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping, photography and gardening. He was a member of the Los Alamos Sportsman Club serving in various capacities including president. He was also a skilled carpenter and woodworker, building and restoring a variety of furniture and other craftwork and building and upgrading homes for his family.\r\n The family has arranged for a graveside ceremony at 11:00am on Friday, August 24, 2012 at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos.\r\n \r\nBetty Ruth Mitchell Hoffman passed away on November 14, 2004, at the age of 86.\r\n She was preceded in death by her brothers, Emmett Holliday Mitchell and Robert Naylor Mitchell. She was survived by her husband of 64 years, C. Gordon Hoffman, her two children, Joe Hoffman and Roberta Hoffman Merchant and four grandchildren, Jessica Hoffman, Bettie Jo Hoffman Basinger, Jean Merchant Chaplin, and Donald Edward Merchant.\r\n Mrs. Hoffman attended the University of Kansas.\r\n Mrs. Hoffman was a resident of Los Alamos for 48 years and retired from LANL. She was active in the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and other civic organizations, generously donating her time to children’s groups as well as seniors. \r\n She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, and needlecrafts. She was a skilled seamstress, making wardrobes and quilts for her grandchildren. She never tired of learning new skills, and took many classes, learning all types of crafts from weaving to painting and drawing.\r\n The family has arranged for a graveside ceremony at 11:00am on Friday August 24, 2012 at Guaje Pines Cemetary in Los Alamos \r\n
