Bertha Maestas

BERTHA M. MAESTAS , 83, a resident of Española passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orlando Maestas; son, Tomas Maestas and grandsons, Kevin D. Martinez, Nicolas Maestas; parents, Concepcion and Esther Martinez; brothers, Manuel, Eloy and Freddie Martinez. Bertha was retired from Jemez co-op after 33 years as a billing supervisor and went on to work another 17 years at NMSU co-op extension. Bertha served at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church until the end. Bertha was kind, caring and always willing to help anyone in need. She was a devoted wife and loved her grandchildren unconditionally. Mrs. Maestas is survived by her children, David Maestas (Cindy) of Los Luceros, Marcia Martinez (Steve L.) of El Duende and Jennifer Maestas of Peoria, Arizona; grandchildren, Camila Melody, Michaela, Angelo, Katherine, Sara Maria Maestas and Joey J. Cross; great-grandchildren, Amaya Seda and Noah Kevin Romero; siblings, Jose C. Martinez (Viola) of Santa Fe and Gilbert Martinez of Albuquerque; loving God-son and hermanito, Senator Richard C. Martinez of Española; sister, Theresa Romero (Henry); her hermanita, Lorraine Abeyta of La Puebla; in-laws, Eneda Sanchez, Lilly Martinez, Dora Garcia, Juanita Sisneros (Alex) and Tony Vigil; special caretaker, Elena Orozco; several God-children and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Española. Burial to follow on Monday, December 31, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, David Maestas, Steve L. Martinez, Anthony Romero, Tim Martinez, Joey Cross, Bobby Sanchez, Julian and Jeremy Baros. Honorary pallbearers named are her God-children, Gilbert Martinez, Leonard Valerio, Christine Romero, Bobby Montoya, Eneda Sanchez, Lorraine and Bethany Abeyta, Angelo Vigil and Toni Ann Vigil. The family of Bertha M. Maestas has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
