Barbara Henderson

d. November 15, 2017

Barbara Rogers Henderson, 81, passed away on November 15, 2017 at Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she was known for her smile and pretty eyes.  She enjoyed living in Pajarito Acres very much since she was raised on a cotton farm in Atoka, south of Artesia, NM.  She had her own horse and thus did not mind the “Horsey set” and especially the lot size.  Music was a large part of her life including clarinet, piano, organ and voice.  She graduated from Artesia High School in1954 and New Mexico A&M in 1958. At A&M she met her future husband though the band and the Presbyterian Church.  She enjoyed gardening, especially growing yellow roses.  In White Rock she learned to swim with her children Roger and Mary Kay. This spawned a long-lasting love of the water, resulting in her becoming a Water Aerobics Instructor and a certified pool operator.  She also learned to ski with the family and enjoyed walking tours.  She was fond of non-luxury travel to places like Peru, Galapagos and the Fiji Islands, and even an autumn canoe tour of New Hampshire and Vermont.  Her arts and crafts interests included candle making, silver working, and stitchery. She was an accomplished cook, remarked with noted dishes of Pink Bunny, Green-chili casserole, cheesecake, all finished with a healthy (or not) serving of snow ice-cream. She was an occasional substitute teacher at Pueblo Junior High.

Of special importance was her friendship with Pat Mendius, sharing both swimming and weekly coffee visits.  Barbara is preceded in death by her sister, Mary Rogers Bly. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Richard; her son Roger and his wife Kristy and their children Erika and Jason of Brentwood, CA; her daughter Mary Kay Henderson of Aurora, CO; and her brother Stanley Day Rogers of Roswell, NM. Per her request, no services are planned. The family of Barbara R. Henderson wishes to thank the thoughtful and caring people of Sombrillo for making her short stay there as comfortable as possible. The family of Barbara R. Henderson of has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley. 505-747-7477 – www.devargasfuneral.com
