AVARISTO ROMERO was born on October 8, 1931. He faithfully departed this earth and went with the Lord on his 84th birthday surrounded by his beloved wife and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Candido and Sarita Romero; son, Bruce, infant daughter Vivian Romero; grandchildren, Willie, Raul, and Joaquin; great-grandson, Eliseo Salazar; brothers, Antonio Romero, Candelario Romero and sister, Luisa Romero.
Mr. Romero is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Dora Romero; eldest daughter, Rose; sons, Joe Romero and wife Maria, Roy Romero; daughters, Nary Maestas, Adrina Cordova and husband Rick, Annabelle Lopez and husband Mike, Betty Walker and husband Doug; daughter-in-law, Cindy Romero; grandchildren, Jennifer, Ronnie, Jose, Marcos, Leroy, Jessie, Ivan, Rick, Jr., Jonathan, Jason, Kendra, Ruben, Adam, Esperanza, Isaiah, Joaquin, Nikki and Jodi; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Gregoria Trujillo and husband Levi, Elsie Amaya and husband Ramon; brother, Octavio Romero and wife Rita; sister-in-law, Augustina Romero; former son-in-law, Ronnie Salazar as well as many relatives and friends too many to mention by name here but fondly acknowledged. He left behind his beloved dogs, Pancho and Negra.
Avaristo began his construction career as a young man in the early 40’s at Los Alamos National Laboratory, a few years in Colorado Springs, then worked for 3 decades at Thunder Mountain and Dale Bellamah homes where he saw a major part of the development of Santa Fe. He then returned to Los Alamos National Laboratory where he contracted with Zia, Pan Am and Johnson Controls before retiring. Avaristo was also a self-taught and avid auto mechanic that loved work so much, he developed a wide-spread reputation for honesty, integrity and high quality work and only asked his payment to be what the customers could afford.
Avaristo was a man of faith and acknowledged his faith each morning with the sign of the cross throughout his life until his dying day. Avaristo loved his family greatly and expressed his love in little words and many actions. The mention of a loved one brought him to tears. He enjoyed conversation with family, friends, and neighbors. He enjoyed a good joke and making others laugh. He taught by example and had many words of wisdom that are remembered by many. Those who knew him recall that if they ever needed his help, they could always count on him in their time of need because he was always there to help. Our father loved sweets; chocolate in particular, and kept his jar of sweets ready to share for anyone that came by to visit. He loved animals and adopted many a stray.
He had a child-like joy of celebrating his birthday, not only for the cake to be had. He accomplished his dying wish of being surrounded by his family on his last day which was also his birthday. He died after his birthday song and last kiss.
Public visitation will begin on Monday, October 12, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a tribute to be follow at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo. Burial to follow at the Nuestra Señora de Carmel Cemetery in Chimayo with the following serving as pallbearers, Ramon Amaya, Ronnie, Ruben and Adam Romero, Rick Cordova, Jr., Leroy, Ivan and Jesse Maestas. Honorary pallbearers named are, Jose and Marcos Romero, Jonathan and Jason Cordova, Jennifer Fetchko, Kendra Walker, Esperanza, Isaiah and Joaquin Salazar.
