Aurora Tafoya Gonzales, 94, a long-time resident of San Pedro, passed away on May 11, 2023, of natural causes. She was born in Espanola, NM on June 8, 1928, the daughter of Celso Tafoya and Eloisa Rodriguez of Las Truchas, NM. She was preceded by her husband, Severo Gonzales, her son, Donald Gonzales, her brothers Celso, David and Ruben Tafoya, and her sister Juanita Tafoya Montoya.
Aurora is survived by sons, Glenn (Espanola) and David (Boston MA), her sister, Doris Tafoya Chavez (Las Cruces, NM) as well as by grandchildren Andrea and Kristen Gonzales (Loveland, CO), Elias and Elena, Bryan Gonzales (Espanola) and Amanda Gonzales (Santa Fe).
Aurora was raised in Las Truchas, NM, where she attended grammar school before transferring to the Menaul School in Albuquerque. As a young woman she helped her parents run the family’s general store. She graduated from the Menaul School, where she thrived academically, in 1947 and began her career with the U.S. Postal Service in Los Alamos, NM in that same year. Her one and only job was with the U.S. Postal Service and would span 43 years, until her retirement in 1990 as U.S. Postmaster in Santa Cruz, NM.
