ARTURO ESQUIPULA TRUJILLO, 85, born January 14, 1926, formerly of Española, passed away in Arizona on Friday, April 8, 2011 where he had retired.\r\n \r\nDuring World War II, at the age of 17, Arturo enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and participated in the invasion of Okinawa and the later occupation of China. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.\r\n \r\nUpon his discharge from the Marine Corps, Arturo returned to Española and operated the Chimayo Trading Post along with his mother, Romanita M. Trujillo. He subsequently worked for the State of New Mexico and as the Transportation Director for the Española Public Schools. He later retired as the City of Española’s Field Superintendent. He was honored by being graduated with the Española Valley High School Class of 2010.\r\n \r\nMr. Trujillo is survived by his daughter, Roberta Diaz; son, Patrick; granddaughters, Suzana and Andrea Diaz; grandson, Marco Llanos; brothers, Leopoldo Trujillo and Floyd Trujillo (Lucille Borrego); sister, Cleo Trujillo (Louie Peralta); brothers and sisters-in-law, Ernesto Vigil (Dolores), Lee Trujillo (Eluteria), Theresa Morowski (Ed), Virginia Allee (James), Cleotilde Birrer (George) and Agnes Trujillo (Isamael) and numerous nephews, nieces and many other relatives and friends in Chimayo, Española and northern New Mexico.\r\n \r\nArturo was preceded in death by his wife, Susie Vigil (d.1979); son, Dennis Lee (d.1980); parents, Esquipula DeAguero (E.D.) Trujillo and Romanita M. Trujillo, founders of the Chimayo Trading Post; father and mother-in-law, Jose Abran Vigil and Ramoncita Sena Vigil; brothers, Jerry Trujillo (Eloisa Garcia), Elias Trujillo (Sally Garcia), Ismael Trujillo (Elisa Borrego); sisters, Rosenda Trujillo (Dr. George Segura) and Alicia Trujillo (Pete Serna); brothers-in-law, Nicholas Vigil (Mary Trujillo), Isidore Vigil (Rose Rivera), Epimenio Vigil and Arsenio Vigil (Elena Gonzales); sisters-in-law, Celina Vigil (Tony Roybal), Mela Vigil (Jim Hight), Rosalda Vigil, Eluteria Vigil (Lee Trujillo) and Ascencion Vigil (Augustine Lujan).\r\n \r\nCremation has taken place. Public visitation will begin on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. Memorial mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 18, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Española with Father Oscar Coelho officiating. Burial to follow at 12:45 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to El Santuario de Chimayo.
