Arthur Sumner Nichols, 85, died April 14, 2014 of natural causes following a long illness. Art, a longtime resident of Los Alamos was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Mary and his sister, Patricia Nagel. He is survived by his sister, Claire Howard of Mashpee, Massachusetts and his children, Kate Nolte (Tom) of Estero, Florida, Arthur Nichols (Jana) of Los Alamos, Patty Ricci (Joseph) of Augusta, Georgia, Joseph Nichols of Payson, Arizona and Jane Nichols of San Francisco; his grandchildren, Meaghan Nolte, Alexandra Nichols, Spencer Nichols, Kirk Rohrig, David Ricci, Sarah Nichols and Matthew Nichols will miss him greatly. Art taught History and Social Studies at Los Alamos High School in the 1950’s and 60’s. He completed his Doctorate in Education at the University of Washington in Seattle. He was a professor of Elementary Education at the University of California Northridge for many years. Art worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Technical Writer and a Group Leader until his retirement. Art had a lifelong interest in railroads; he was a long time member of the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad, was the editor for the Cumbres and Toltec Newsletter and later became an honorary board member. Art and Mary were parishioners at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos. Services will be held in July. The family of Arthur Sumner Nichols has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
