Army Major Wendy Fiona Mares-Gallegos & Russell Glen Gallegos, residents of Española and Wendy was originally of Taos, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 6, 2012. They both enjoyed spending time outdoors and being at the lake, boating, scuba diving, and traveling. Russell enjoyed going hunting and fishing and was a dedicated hardworking man and owner of Gallegos Scrap Metal. He was also a very loving father, husband & friend. Wendy was a dedicated Major in the United States Army. Wendy loved to exercise and received numerous medals while in the Army: Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional, Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserved Medal with Device, Nato Medal, Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge and Air Assault Badge. Wendy was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Pat and Candelaria Medina; paternal grandparents, Esequiel and Pablita Mares; and maternal grandmother, Marjorie Case. Russell was preceded in death by his grandfather, Hipolito Gallegos. Wendy is survived by her parents, Tom and Edna Mares of Ranchos de Taos; daughters: Chanelle Ashley Mares- Loera and husband Christian both stationed at Fort Bliss, TX and McKenna-Rae Trujillo of Taos; sister, Shona Bond and husband Gordon of Ranchos de Taos; nephew, Cruz Bond; father of her children, Adrian Trujillo; numerous uncles, aunts & other loving relatives & friends. Russell is survived by his parents, Glen and Patsy Gallegos of Ranchitos; children: Kristen Riana Gallegos and Timothy Russell Gallegos both of El Llano; sisters: Leslie Gallegos of El Llano and Melissa Montoya and husband Arthur of Albuquerque; nephews: Adam and David Roybal; mother of his children, Jeannie Gallegos of Santa Fe; numerous uncles & other loving relatives & friends. Memorial mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe with burial to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 12:45 p.m. The family of Wendy Fiona Mares-Gallegos and Russell Glen Gallegos have entrusted the care of their loved ones to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley. 505-747-7477
