Ann Grayson Barker-Wohletz lost her battle with cancer on January 25, 2011. Ann was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 17, 1951. She graduated from Glenbard High School in Glen Ellen, Illinois, and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1974 from the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.\r\nAnn came to Los Alamos, New Mexico, when she accepted a position as the Director of the Fuller Lodge Art Center. After a few years as Director, Ann decided it was time for a career change and, in 1981, became a member of the first class of the Women in Science (WIS) Program at the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos. She graduated in 1983 and began work at the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a computer programmer in the Nuclear Engineering Division. As Ann’s skills and duties broadened and expanded, she became a system administrator for UNIX and other operating systems, becoming an organizational computer security representative (OCSR) and an alternate COMSEC sub control officer. Ann spent over 20 years supporting the same groups and staffs through multiple reorganizations through Technology and Safety Assessment and Decision Analysis Divisions. In a last major reorganization, Ann transferred to the Departmental Computing Services Division, where she served as a UNIX system administrator in the Applied Physics Division until her 2010 illness.\r\nAnn met her husband, Kenneth Wohletz, in Los Alamos, and they were married on May 22, 1982. Ann was a member of the Valle Grande Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Delta Gamma Society of the University of Georgia. She was active in the Girl Scouts and served as a Troop Leader for 8 years and a Co-Neighborhood Chair for 3 years. Ann was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.\r\nAnn actively supported the Los Alamos High School Cross-Country and Girls’ Soccer Teams and hosted many dinners for the teams. She loved to travel and visited many countries, including the Soviet Union, most of Western Europe, and Argentina. Ann was an avid sports fan and loved outdoor sports. She particularly loved hiking with the family dogs, Madison and Jackson. Many weekends, Ann could be found cheering for her favorite collegiate or professional team, either in person or on TV with family and friends. Perhaps Ann’s favorite activity were her yearly trips to Lake Powell with family and friends, where she could leisurely explore new and old places and spend her days floating in the cool lake waters.\r\nAnn is survived by her husband, Kenneth Wohletz, and her children, Loren Kenneth Wohletz and Sonya Grayson Wohletz. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie Bronaugh Barker and Thomas O’Hara Barker. A rosary and vigil will be held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Los Alamos at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 8, 2011. Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 also at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Los Alamos. Interment will take place at Rosario Cemetery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, at a later date.\r\nIn lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ann’s name to the Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service (113 Central Park Square, Los Alamos, NM 87544) or to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research (www.curepc.org). Ann’s obituary is also available with pictures and a guest book in Current Obituaries listed at DeVargasFuneral.com.
