Andrew Garcia Sr., 79, a resident of Ohkay Owingeh, passed away on Friday, June 1, 2018. Andrew was preceded in death by his parents, David and Epifania Garcia; son, Daron; grandchildren, Darron Joe, Nadine and Jared; siblings, Timothy, Freddie, Martha and Rose; son-in-law, Paul; mother-in-law, Frances N.; sister-in-law, Andrea; nephews and nieces, Al, John and Jennifer. Andrew was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. and was extremely involved in his native culture. In 1974 Andrew started a dance group called “Tewa Dancers from the North,” which allowed him to travel around the world to Brazil, India, Columbia, Canada and Spain to name a few. He also gave youth from his tribe the opportunities to travel with him. Along with this, he assisted the Pueblos of Pojoaque and Santa Clara. His family meant a lot to him. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed going to the casino. Every morning, he looked forward to having breakfast with his wife and casino buddies. Andrew was a very respectful man whom was loved and will be dearly missed by many. Andrew is survived by his wife, Verna Garcia; children, Ants, Aldric, Faron, Mike (Lori), ReyAnn (Woods), Tara, Dorea (George), Myra, Gen, Patricia and Roselynn; grandchildren, Butterfly, Curt (Ruby), Darron, Kayla (Ryan), Jahneah (Richard), Marisa, Melanie, Asia, Jackie (Darren), Amber, Mike and Monique; great-grandchildren, Elmirah, Joaquin, Danielle, Jireh, Javen, Brennan, Aliyah, DeeAnna, Aiyana, Zaylani, Yariah, Jasper and Malaya; sister, Frances Namingha (Dan); brothers-in-law, Joseph Trujillo and Eloy Abeyta; sisters-in-law, Carma Wyaco and Ivora Nastacio and numerous nieces, nephews and friends whom he loved dearly. Special thank you to Arlo, Nicole and Michael Namingha, Bryce and Asia Gabaldon and his special pet Peaches. A rosary will be recited on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. with a second rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. at Andrew’s residence at 119 Drum Place in Ohkay Owingeh. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 4 at 9:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with a burial to follow at the Ohkay Owingeh Cemetery. Serving the family as pallbearers will be Arlo, Ryan, Chris N., Darron, Butterfly, Andrew (Dru), Jamie, Jace, Tryel, Woods, Richard, Wayne, Gaylon and Chris G. The family of Andrew Garcia Sr. has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
