Anastacio T. Vigil, age 97, a lifelong resident of Chimayo, NM, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, the morning of October 30, 2023.
Anastacio was born on April 15, 1926, to parents Canuto and Augustina Vigil in the village of Cundiyo, NM. He is pre-deceased by his wife Fabiola, newborn daughter Lorraine, son Melvin, his parents, siblings Eliza, George, Gerson, Viola and their respective spouses. He is also pre-deceased by his father and mother-in-law, Apolonio and Celestina Martinez as well as numerous Martinez and Trujillo in laws.
Anastacio is survived by his 4 children, Beverly and companion Eric Shockey, Lorraine and husband Eric Vigil, Jack and wife Evelyn Garcia, Barbara and husband Randy Montoya. 8 grandchildren, Monica Aragon, Fernando Vigil and wife Julie, Lorenzo Martinez and wife Jessica, Vanessa Montoya, Ana Vigil Gallegos and husband Cruz, Kevin Montoya and wife Sabrina, Marco Vigil and wife Amber, Erica Flores and husband Alfredo Jr and 14 great grandchildren.
Also, surviving Anastacio is his brother-in-law Ascension Martinez, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Upon graduation from Pojoaque High School in 1944, he joined the United States Army Air Force where he was a Radio Technician. He was responsible for ensuring the airplane radios were in proper working order prior to airplane take offs. He was extremely proud of his service duty to his country during World War II.
He was employed by NM State Highway Department as a maintenance and grounds supervisor, where he retired after 28 years of service. He always kept the grounds meticulously manicured and the dahlias and marigolds always in full bloom. He was presented a certificate of recognition by then Governor Jerry and Mrs. Apodaca for his red, white and blue flower display on the main Highway Dept. building in Santa Fe.
Anastacio was very active in his church as well as in the Chimayo community. His community work included Post Commander of American Legion Post 55 in Cundiyo, Adjudant for American Legion Post 65 in Chimayo, Chairman for the Chimayo Boy Scout Council, President of the 4H Council Chairman of the Chimayo community Developers Association, founding member of the Chimayo volunteer fire dept. and the NM Historical Foundation.
As an active lifelong parishioner of the Holy Family Parish his services include positions of president, and treasurer of Holy Name Society, Parish Council, member of Finance committee, and member of the Coro de La Sagrada Familia. Sunday Mass Usher and was the caretaker for the Sagrada Familia Cemetery at El Potrero.
Anastacio and Fabiola enjoyed traveling and toured all 50 states as well as various destinations in Europe.
Anastacio was very hard working, dedicated and took great pride in all that he accomplished in his 97 years. These traits have been passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Services for Anastacio will be held on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. Viewing at 8:00 am. Recitation of Holy Rosary at 8:30 am, with the funeral mass to follow at 9:00 am at Holy Family Church in Chimayo, NM. Burial shall take place at 12:30 pm at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
Serving the family as pall bearers are Randy Montoya, Eric Vigil, Fernando and Marco Vigil, Lorenzo Martinez, and Kevin Montoya. Honorary pall bearers Eric Shockey, Leroy Sandoval, Connie Maestas and his grand and great grandchildren
The family of Anastacio would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of Love, support and Prayers. Thanks to all who provided food, the phone calls and visits to the home and hospital.
A very special thanks to the incredible staff of Ambercare, especially nurse Anna Dixon. Thank you to the physicians, nurses, and staff at Christus St. Vincent including the Rehab Unit.
Last, but by no means least, a big thank you to his private caregivers, Bernadette Herrera and Evelyn Martinez who provided such kind and compassionate care at Anastacio’s home.
