Allen R. Manthei, 83, a resident of Los Alamos passed away suddenly at his home on Tuesday, November 9, 2010. Al was born in Tacoma, Washington and grew up in communities around Puget Sound. He loved airplanes and got his pilot’s license before he got a driver’s license as a teenager. Al served in the US Army at the end of World War II and attended the College of Puget Sound where he earned a Bachelors’ Degree in Physics. In January of 1956, Al moved to Los Alamos to work for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. He spent his lab career in W-7 and WX-5 retiring after 35 years in 1991. Al enjoyed a lengthy retirement, traveling extensively with his wife Maggi. He loved to fish and took time to enjoy outdoor adventures throughout the southwest. Al was preceded in death by his son, Karl Manthei of Pagosa Springs, CO. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Maggi of Los Alamos; son, Lee Manthei and his wife Linda and their daughter Quinn of Ashton, Virginia; grandson, Kale Hartwig and his wife Maisie and their children Kannon and Mylee; granddaughter, Lela Boyd and her husband Sean and their children Daysen, Brenner and Zane. A memorial service celebrating the life of Al Manthei will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Church in Los Alamos, 2525 Canyon Rd. A reception will follow the service.
