Alfred Chandler Bateman, 85, a resident of Los Alamos, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. Al is best remembered as a sweet, caring, and patient father, colleague, and friend to many. He will be greatly missed by his two sons, Andy Bateman (and wife Lindsay) and Jef Bateman (and wife Sheryl); sister, Tari French; grandchildren Noah, Amelia and Josie. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Emilie Bateman, his wife Judith, and daughter Elizabeth.
Al was born in Berkeley, California in 1937 and was an active member of his high school marching band, playing the sousaphone. He was also a Sea Scout and lifeguard. Al graduated from California Polytechnic University - San Luis Obispo in 1960 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Al worked for the Los Alamos National Laboratory for almost his entire career, from 1960 til his retirement in the early 2000’s, with a brief one-year tenure working for ACF Industries in Albuquerque in 1964. Al worked in numerous divisions at the laboratory, but the bulk of his time was spent with GMX-5, J-7, and WX-5 divisions, as well as stints working at the Nevada test site. Al was known as an expert in multi-function valve design. After retiring from the laboratory, Al worked as a security escort at the lab for several years.
Al was an active member of the White Rock United Methodist Church, and donated to numerous charities, including LA Cares and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Until recently, Al was frequently spotted in the La Vista neighborhood of White Rock, walking his two Shih Tzu dogs, Millie and Lola. He loved greeting neighbors and swapping stories with former colleagues and friends.
Family, friends, and acquaintances of Al are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at 10:30 AM at the White Rock United Methodist Church.
