ALEXINA J. SERNA, 98, a resident of Española, went to Heaven on Friday, November 22, 2013 after 98 years and 9 months to reunite with her husband, Edward Serna; her parents, Jose Bernardo and Asenaida Salazar; sister, Estella Barrett; brothers, Jose Bernardo, Jose Eusebio, and Johnnie Reuben Salazar; sons-in-law, Joe Archuleta, Richard John Lawrence, and Gene Gonzales; and her in-laws Romulo and Patrocinia Serna.\r\nAlexina dearly loved and was a loyal mother to her children; Amy and husband Raymond Martinez of Colorado Springs, CO, Henry Jake Serna and wife Della of Española, MaryAnn and husband Richard Woods of Evergreen, CO, Vicky Gonzales of Leadville, CO, Cecilia Archuleta of Española, and Edward L. Serna and wife Yolanda of Española.\r\nAlexina was a doting grandmother to seventeen grandchildren; Carl, Brenda, Mark & Jeanette Martinez, Jacobo de la Serna & Sherrijean Serna, Kelly & John Lawrence, Andy, Julie, Duane & Tammy Gonzales, Michael, Veronica, Joseph Edward & Crystal Archuleta and Ashley Serna.\r\nAlexina was also a great-grandmother to; Marco Solis & Marisol Cobos, Angel & Marcos Martinez, Alanis Nunez, Enrica Mari Serna, Bonnie Robinson, Quentin Ham, & Sofia Chiarandini, Brooke Sullivan & Phillip Clickner, Joleen & Christy Archuleta, and Jesse-James Archuleta & Sierra Rose Rodriguez. On March 19, 2011 Charlotte Aurora Pace, born to Bonnie Robinson and Jonathan Pace graced Alexina with the title of great-great grandmother.\r\nEdward and Alexina raised their children together in Climax Colorado and later in Española. After being widowed in 1972 at age 57, Alexina put her faith in Jesus Christ and dedicated her life to her family. Alexina was a strong and dynamic woman who worked all her life to instill high moral principles, a sense of responsibility and an abiding love and respect for family and country. Her energy and steadfast beliefs were unparalleled. Traveling to many distant places such as Europe, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines, her winning smile and twinkling eyes never met a stranger throughout thirty-two of the United States and abroad. Alexina was involved in local politics in New Mexico and served as Administrative Assistant to Kit Carson the III in Conejos County, CO where she was born, raised and graduated from high school in Manassa, CO before she married and moved to New Mexico. She was a humble woman who enjoyed all life’s blessings, large and small. She loved life most when her descendants gathered around her in her home during holidays, birthdays and family reunions to visit, have sing-a-longs, play music, play games and eat delicious meals.\r\nAlexina’s family extends our deep thanks to all who provided care to her in a loving Christian way and to those who took time to visit her, phone her or remember her through written greetings. Public visitation will begin on Monday, November 25, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Española. Burial to follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Española. A reception to follow at Anthony’s at the Delta on US 285 in Española. The family of Alexina J. Serna has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
