Alcario Chacon, a lifetime resident of Gallina and Llaves, NM, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the age of 85. He was born on March 28, 1938, to Thomas and Carmelita Chacon. Alcario and his brothers grew up sheep herding in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. They tended over 5,000 head of sheep at a time. At the age of 20, he met his lifelong love, Rosalia Aragon.
He is preceded in death by his parents Thomas, Carmelita, 7 siblings, and his daughter Eva Sturdevant.
He is survived by his wife Rosalia of 64 years, 9 of his 10 children 5 girls, 5 boys which he loved to say, “That’s the way I ordered them”. Eric (Loreda), Maclovia (Mike), Tommy (Judy) Amadeo (Adela), Carmelita (Leroy), Alex (Donna), Alcario, Eva, Theresita (Lance), and Veronica (Roy). Alcario is also survived by 28 grandkids, 36 great-grandkids, and 2 great, great grandkids and 1 brother Zebedeo Chacon (Lucinda).
Alcario’s many careers included his lifelong passion for sheep herding, ranching, logging, mining, oilfield, and the US Forest Service, where he retired from. He was a devout catholic and an Hermano/Penitente. He always made sure that his family was taken care of. Everyone knew Alcario loved life and people. Everyone he met always became a friend. He always treated everyone with respect, even though he was always joking. Therefore, those who knew him respected him tenfold. He was a big fan of bananas and blackberries. He was always telling stories of his youth.
A public visitation will take place on Thursday June 1, 2023, at 6:00 pm at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Gallina, NM, with a rosary to follow at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, June 2, 2023, at 11:00 am also at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Gallina, NM and burial to follow at Gallina Community Cemetery in Gallina.
Pallbearers are, Matthew Chacon, Miguel Martinez, PJ Tafoya, Gabriel Chacon, Jose Martinez and Michael Chacon.
