JOE E. MEDINA , 93, a resident of Alcalde, passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents, Serapio Medina Sr. and Escolastica Archuleta Medina; infant son, Joseph; sisters, Mabel Medina and Mary Martinez; brothers, Hube, Mike, Sarapio Jr., Paul and Tony Medina; sisters-in-law, Orbilia, Madeline and Dorothy Medina; and brother-in-law, Juan Martinez. Joe was a farmer and worked his own farm in the San Luis Valley. He was raised in Jaroso, CO. In his young age in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, Joe and his brother had a musical band known at the Rainbow Boys. They played for dances and weddings around southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico. From 1955 to 1966 Joe worked for the Taos soil and water conservation district as a heavy equipment operator. In August of 1967 he moved to Española and worked for 25 years at Hunter Motor Company as an auto body repair and painter, a job he loved to do. After retirement he continued his trade at home until 2012. Mr. Medina is survived by his wife of 63 years, Teresa Medina; children, Joylene (Vincent) Valdez, Joey Medina of Alcalde and Joseph Dale (Ruby) Medina of Española; grandchildren, Marcos Valdez, Deanna (Jeff) Saba of Westminster, CO, David Valdez, Fabian (Donna) Valdez, Desirae (Ty) Lujan of Alcalde, Jennifer (James) Espinoza of Mora, Matthew and Joseph Medina of Española, Brian Medina of Taos, Amanda and Sarah Medina of Denver, CO; great-grandchildren, Steven and Joshua Saba, Tyson and Logan Lujan, James Jr. (Cheyenne), Sarah and Jenai Espinoza, Hannah and Felice Gallegos and Kaitlyn Thomas; great-great-grandsons, Nicolas and Lukas; sister, Cora Medina of Boone, CO; brother, Frank Medina of Rocky Ford, CO; sisters-in-law, Lena Medina of Pueblo, CO, Erma, Ellen and Mary Medina all of Colorado Springs, CO and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Sunday, June 14, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Monday, June 15, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh. Burial to follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Española with the following serving the family as pallbearers, Mathew and Joseph Medina, Fabian, Marcos and David Valdez and Jeff Saba. The family of Joe E. Medina has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
