DAN A. BUSTOS, 91, a resident of Española, was called to his Heavenly home on Friday, August 23, 2019. He was born in Cebolla on February 23, 1928. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Virginia Mae Bustos; sons, Johnny A. Bustos and Robert Bustos; parents, Jose D. and Elena Bustos; brothers, Jake and Eugene Bustos and sisters, Luisa, Fernanda, Helen and Isabel. He attended Tierra Amarilla High School and left to serve his country with the U.S. Airforce from 1946-1949. During his time of military service, he received his high school diploma and GI. Bill. He then attended and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education from NM Highlands University. He also received Masters certifications in Teaching Math Strategies from various universities. Upon returning from the service, he married the love of his life, Rosalie. Together they had six children and were married for over 67 years. He started his career teaching and coaching at a few schools in the villages of northern New Mexico. He then completed 40 years with the Española Public Schools as a math teacher from 1954-1994. He had an affinity for numbers and enjoyed doing his finances and income tax returns by hand (no computers or calculators needed). He enjoyed watching the Denver Broncos and old western shows reminiscing of his horse, Dandy. In his younger years, he enjoyed camping and the mountain life with his family. He was a devoted member of the Holy Family of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Mr. Bustos is survived by his loving long time wife of 67 years, Rosalie M. Bustos; children, Jimmy Bustos, Sr. (Lucille), Danny Bustos and Bea Jurgensen (Kenn); grandchildren, Jimmy, Jr., Christopher, Dana, Bobby, Jr., Crystal, Caleb, Jeremiah, Jeffrey, Amy, Katrina, D.J. and Danee Bustos, Mark Bustos (Rachel), Amber and Stephanie Jurgensen and Maria Schwinkendorf (Steve); great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Isaac, Jr., Xavier, Zeus, Jayson, Lydia Ann, Bobby III, Autumn and Isabella; sister, Norma Jean Purdy and other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Monday, September 2, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Española. Burial to follow at 12:45 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Danny Bustos, Jimmy Bustos, Jr., Bobby Bustos, Jr., Kenn Jurgensen, Mike Purdy, and Danue Bustos, Jr. Honorary pallbearers named are, Jimmy Bustos, Sr., Bea Jurgensen and all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family of Dan A. Bustos has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
